Wave: A Sculptural Bench Inspired by the Serenity of the Ocean

A Unique and Ergonomic Design by John Cruz

Created from simple framing dimensional lumber, Wave is a unique bench that evokes simplicity in construction and elegance in design with a sculptor's touch. Its seating contours and individual blocks provide ergonomic support and comfort.

This bench was designed using advanced computer modeling and rendering software. The construction of Wave is simple, employing easy-to-source framing (2"x2") lumber and 3/8" plywood strips fastened together according to the rough shape of the design. The sourced lumber can be spruce, pine, maple, or cedar. Then, the top surfaces of each wood block are sculpted with a grinder to produce the signature wave shape.

Wave measures 1524mm in width, 457mm in depth, and 457mm in height.

Have a seat! Try it. Lounge on it. Enjoy it. Wave provides ergonomic comfort when a person lounges length-wise on the seating surface. A person's weight is distributed across the surface area of the wood blocks, providing a massaging sensation as the individual shifts their weight from one side to the other.

Wave started as a concept in October 2013. After several modeling revisions, the design was finalized, and the physical prototype is currently being assembled and will be completed in December 2013.

John Cruz, a designer with a background in the video game industry, wanted to merge the virtual world of computer graphics imagery (CGI) with the real natural world by using his knowledge of CGI principles in the design of furniture. Starting with the cube as a basic element in CGI, Cruz infused it with a ripple pattern, a form that naturally occurs in the environment, giving birth to the Wave design.

The most challenging aspect of this project was translating the computer-modeled design into practical construction using conventional techniques. With some adjustments to the initial design and innovative construction techniques, Wave became a reality.

Wave is a testament to the fusion of technology and nature in contemporary furniture design. With its simple yet elegant form, it adds a touch of sophistication to any space. John Cruz's creation has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in 2014, a prestigious accolade that celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
